Permafrost and Periglacial Processes

چکیده
The microbial process of methane (CH4) production during the back-freezing of permafrost soils in autumn and the future fate of produced CH4 in the thawing phase of the following spring are not well understood. Long-term CH4 flux studies in the Lena Delta (Siberia) indicate that back-stored CH4 adds to the emission of newly-produced CH4 at the beginning of the vegetation period. Further field analysis shows that microbial CH4 production already occurs at in situ temperatures of around 1 C in the bottom layer of the soil. Therefore, a permafrost microcosm was developed to simulate the influence of the annual freezing-thawing cycles on the CH4 fluxes in the active layer of permafrost soils. Two cryostats ensure independent freezing and thawing the top and the bottom of the microcosm to simulate different field conditions. The CH4 concentration (Rhizon soil moisture samplers), the soil temperature (film platinum resistance temperature detectors [RTDs]) and the soil water content (time domain reflectometry) are analysed in different depths of the microcosm during the simulation in addition to the concentration of emitted CH4 in the headspace of the microcosm. The data obtained contribute to the understanding of microbial processes and CH4 fluxes in permafrost environments in the autumn and early winter. Copyright # 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Criteria to discriminate between proglacial and paraglacial environments
the original meaning of “areas peripheral to Pleistocene ice sheets and glaciers” (Lozinski 1909) to one which stresses the distinctive processes of freeze-thaw and permafrost formation. In spite of the comment by Worsley (2004) that the term periglacial has no universally accepted definition, there are really only two options that are in common use: a) an environment of frequent freeze-thaw cy...
متن کاملGlacial and Periglacial Evolution of the Mulhacen Cirque (Sierra Nevada, Southern Iberian Peninsula)
Semiarid Mediterranean mountains are in general very sensitive to global climate warming in terms of deglaciation and permafrost degradation. In the context of the PACE-Project (Permafrost and Climate in Europe) the aim of the undertaken research is to gain a better understanding of late Pleistocene and Holocene glacial and periglacial history of Sierra Nevada, the southernmost European range w...

متن کاملApplication of Landsat-7 satellite data and a DEM for the quantification of thermokarst-affected terrain types in the periglacial Lena–Anabar coastal lowland
Extensive parts of Arctic permafrost-dominated lowlands were affected by large-scale permafrost degradation, mainly through Holocene thermokarst activity. The effect of thermokarst is nowadays observed in most periglacial lowlands of the Arctic. Since permafrost degradation is a consequence as well as a significant factor of global climate change, it is necessary to develop efficient methods fo...

متن کاملRock glaciers in crystalline catchments: Hidden permafrost‐related threats to alpine headwater lakes
A global warming-induced transition from glacial to periglacial processes has been identified in mountainous regions around the world. Degrading permafrost in pristine periglacial environments can produce acid rock drainage (ARD) and cause severe ecological damage in areas underlain by sulfide-bearing bedrock. Limnological and paleolimnological approaches were used to assess and compare ARDs ge...
